Besides the striking title, the inseparable Hollywood show, and the impossible happy end thanks to the main hero...besides many other shortcomings, the movie contains IMPORTANT MOMENTS, REAL SCENARIOS. The terrorist bomb in Baltimore almost started a World war with Russia.
The two videos found on youtube are not showing the most important - how the American connections with the newly elected president - dictator (Putin?) first started as almost "friendly", and step by step reached almost to the freezing point. The Russian president did not want to start a World War, but he was repeatedly put in situations to choose between starting it and being hit first. The American president president (who mysteriously survived the terrorist nuclear blast from a mile or so) didn't want to start a World war either, but he was sure it were the Russians behind - i.e. he could expect more than one bomb.
Finally, it was the Russian dictator-president who decided to scale back the weapons at the critical moment, when the invisible American stealths were above Poland - he had every reason to believe they are coming to strike, therefore he should launch the missiles before that. But he decided not to do so - to give a chance of peace that could be a chance of the successful US strike as well. It is honorable for that pure American movie to acknowledge that a Russian dictator is capable of that. It would be more logical to portray the American president to scale back the weapons first. Actually the US president decided not to launch missiles, but he sent the stealths anyway. In a real situation, I cannot imagine Putin not to launch missiles/planes/submarines if the American stealths come at a striking distance.
The movie has MANY SHORTCOMINGS, including how an Israeli bomb could be first stolen from USA, then abandoned in the desert, then reaching to the terrorists. "The professional works simple" says another movie about the Mafia. IN A REAL SITUATION, the "terrorists" would rather BUY A COUPLE OF READY BOMBS, rather than playing tricks.
The "The Sum of all fears" was quoted by a senior member of Bush administration in 2007 (or 2006?) as a possible scenario. If you haven't watched it yet, better spend 2 hours while concentrating on the main events as a very likely scenario, not paying attention to all those unrealistic things that only diminish its value. After all, it is a Happy End, while tomorrow situation might not be.
